Following the impact of coronavirus on food security in sub-Saharan Africa, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has today revealed a plan to handover 3,999 tons of cereal grains to the Federal Government of Nigeria on Friday. The ECOWAS Commissioner of Finance, Mrs. Halima Ahmed disclosed this to newsmen in Abuja, saying the handover will take place at Hotoro ECOWAS grain deport located in Kano, Kano State.
She explained that this was part of the food security the community has pledged to make readily available for its neighboring state to cushion the impact of COVID-19 that has devastated the economic activity in the region.
The grain would be taken from the stock of the ECOWAS Regional Food Security Reserve, partly stored with the Federal Strategic Reserve Department (FSRD), and would be distributed free of charge to the most vulnerable households who were badly affected by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic economic devastation.
Hope would be rekindled to most families who were struggling with means of survival, especially food for their families.
