The United state government through its embassy sitting in Abuja has announced that it has increased its visa charges against Nigerians as “a reciprocity fee” on Nigerians seeking to travel to the United state.
It says the new charges will only be applicable to those whom their visa has been approved.
The declaration was contained in a statement released by the U.S. government sitting in Abuja.
The new charges will vary from $80 to $110 (N28,800 to N39,600) depending on the category of visa the intending person applied for.
The statement added, the new fee will be charged in addition to the non-immigrant visa application fee, also known as the MRV fee, which all applicants do pay for regular visa application.
The embassy throws their weight behind the fact that the Nigerian government is doing the same to their citizens visiting Nigeria and so it shall be applicable to Nigerians as well.
“U.S. law demands that U.S. visa fees and validity periods should be based on the treatment accorded to U.S. citizens by foreign governments, insofar as possible.”
The U.S. is a major destination for thousands of Nigerians who travel annually for various reasons including education, leisure, and work.
