The bill was passed following a clause by clause consideration of the report of the committee on Customs and Excise, chaired by Sen. Hope Uzodinma, Senator representing Imo West Senatorial District. Sen. Uzodinma said the passage of the bill could not have come at a more auspicious time even as the current Act establishing the Nigeria Customs Service was last overhauled in 1958.

He noted that the passage of the bill would assist in rejuvenating and repositioning the Service for greater efficiency and productivity.

In his remarks, the President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki commended the committee and expressed optimism that the bill when assented to, would modernize the Service and ensure Nigeria complies with international commitments of the World Customs Organization (WCO).
