Grammy-nominated Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, has called on the Nigerian authorities to consider legalising the use of marijuana in the country. According to him, there is yet no scientific prove that the use of Marijuana has any health hazard either near or later. He noted that Nigeria has lost its unique strain of marijuana because of its draconian laws towards it while drinking beer kills people on road every day.
The nonconformist singer added that many countries around the globe including Israel, which Nigerian Christians regards as their “Holy Land” has legalise the use of the substance.
Speaking in a recent Instagram live session with his fans, Kuti said, “Nobody can show me any scientific evidence that links marijuana use to any disease.
Kuti added that “Africa used to have the best marijuana in the world but we’ve lost that strain of marijuana that they use to grow in Obiarukwu forest in Asaba and Sapele in the Delta region. We’ve lost it because she didn’t encourage the cultivation.
“Now, the West has the best marijuana. Germany is going to legalise it very soon. France, Britain and America are talking about it too. It’s already legalised in Canada.
“Has Nigeria government independently carried out any research on marijuana use? Even in Israel, the land of your ‘lord’, the ‘holy land’, marijuana is legal. In fact, Israel is at the forefront of medical marijuana research.”
However, contrary to his claim, the World Health Organisation, WHO, said “cannabis use can exacerbate schizophrenia in affected individuals; epithelial injury of the trachea and major bronchi is caused by long-term cannabis smoking.”
More so, the use marijuana has been discovered to have an increased risk of heart disease and heart attack, according to a study led by researchers at Stanford Medicine.
Meanwhile, Omoyele Sowore, the president flag bearer of the AA party in the 2019 and 2023 general election had made it part of his campaign promise that if Nigeria voted him into power, he was going to legalise marijuana use.
