The Human Rights Watch (HRW) reports that Cameroonian Military are torturing and sexually abusing Nigerian refugees and asylum seekers and denying them access to the United Nations refugee agency in the country. NAN reports that Cameroon has so far deported 100, 000 Nigerian refugees under the guise of stemming the activities of Boko Haram in the country.
The report said "Cameroon authority defied plea by UN refugee agency to not return anyone to north-eastern Nigeria, where Boko Haram killed thousands of people, until security and human rights situation improved considerably.”
The HRW lamented that the deportation is being violently carried out with huge implications for the affected Nigerians.
In a recent report published by the Associate Refugee Director, Gerry Simpson, HRW said “the Cameroonian military torture and abuse of Nigerian refugees seems to be driven by an arbitrary decision to punish them for Boko Haram attacks in Cameroon and to discourage Nigerians from seeking asylum.”
The report said the exercise has led to the death of many Nigerians while others have sustained various degrees of bodily harm. It assured that it was sustaining engagement with the Cameroonian government with a view to reversing the situation.
