Several armed attackers on Wednesday morning, opened fire at the Iranian parliament and Ayatollah Khomeini’s mausoleum in Tehran with about seven dead and several injured in the twin attack at the time of reporting.The assailants armed with a pistol and 2 AK-47 rifles carried out the attack in central Tehran.
One of the attackers detonated a suicide vest, another killed by security forces while other attackers were arrested and foiled by security forces.
The Islamic State group claimed responsible for the pair of attacks killing seven and wounded several people, with a siege maintain at the parliament before security forces over ran the attackers.
It marks the first attack in Iran claimed by the extremist group, which is at war with Iranian-backed forces in Syria and Iraq.
The IS group claimed its fighters were behind the assaults as reporters by Reuters news agency. The group often claims attacks around the world, even when links to the group cannot be confirmed and appear dubious. Iranian security officials have not said who is behind the attacks.
However, Iranian TV said parliament had resumed, and broadcast footage of what it said was the opening session proceeding normally.
