The organised Labour has called off its earlier directive to embark on nationwide industrial action following intervention by the federal government on Saturday 30th Sept, 2023. Labour has earlier directs all its affiliate members to withdraw their services and shut down the economy following the resistance by the federal government to ameliorate the hardship the removal of fuel subsidy has inflicted on Nigerian workers especially.
As the strike action was eminent, the federal government invited the organised Labour for a round-table discussion at the end where the federal government agreed to increase the civil Servant salaries by N25,000 across board for the next six month with immediate effect.
The meeting was chaired by the chief of Staff to president Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila and other prominent ministers like that of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, and minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.
In a communiqué issued by the organised labour last night after a wide consultation with the labour organs, the Labour has suspended the strike for 30days while negotiations with federal government continues.
The communiqué also mandated the Minister of Labour to look into the withheld University lecturers 8months salaries which president Buhari denied them.
The communiqué was signed by the NLC president, Joe Ajaero, his General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja; TUC President, Festus Usifo, and his General Secretary, Nuhu Toro.
On the side of the federal government, those who signed were; Minister of Labour, Simon Lalong, Minister of state for Labour and Employment, Dr Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, and Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed idris.
The communiqué partly reads; “The NLC and TUC accept to suspend for 30 days the planned Indefinite Nationwide strike scheduled to begin, Tuesday, the 3rd of October, 2023.”
“The Federal Government grants a wage award of N35,000 (thirty-five thousand Naira) only to all Federal Government workers beginning from the month of September pending when a new national minimum wage is expected to have been signed into law.
“The issue of outstanding Salaries and Wages of Tertiary Education workers in Federal-owned educational institutions is being referred to the Ministry of Labour and Employment for further engagement.” it read partly.
