Taraba state Governor, Arc. Darius Ishaku on Wednesday 4th July 2019 signed into law capital punishment for kidnappers in the state. This followed the recent enactment of the edict by the State's House of Assembly on anti-kidnapping. The new law states that anyone convicted of kidnapping would be liable to a death sentence.
The bill was borne out of the alarming spate of kidnappings across the State and was sponsored by Peter Abel Diah, Speaker of the State House of Assembly. During its passage, the bill was supported unanimously by all members of the Assembly.
In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Bala Dan Abu stated that the law is intended to help contain kidnapping which is today a major concern in Taraba state.
Also, the statement added that under the new law, anyone found guilty of abduction or kidnapping in the state will pay the supreme price for it.
Abu stressed that the law is a product of the Government’s concern about insecurity in the state.
