President Muhammadu Buhari has approved an operation tagged ‘OPERATION SWIFT RESPONSE’ on Saturday, February, 29, as a border drill exercise to checkmate the illegal activities of smugglers across the nation’s borders. The exercise is to further the assurance of food security and improve the local production of goods at competitive prices by the federal government.
The above information was made public in a statement by Special Adviser to Mr President on media and publicity Femi Adesina.
The presidency said the border drill has been hugely successful and has led to the interception and seizure of large quantities of foods, materials, minerals and petroleum resources illegally trafficked across borders.
Mr President, however, expressed displeasure at security officials who set-free 295 smuggled petroleum tankers without seeking proper authorization. He instructed that a board be set up to investigate the incident and disciplinary measures should be prescribed for the offenders.
