The United Methodist Church of Nigeria (UMCN) has threatened to exit the mainstream body if it accepts to endorse the same-sex mirage in its upcoming year 2022 General conference.
Bishop John Wesley Yohanna, one of the priests of the church made this known during a news conference today in Jalingo, Taraba state.
The cleric insisted that the Nigerian chapter of the church is strongly against the ordination of gay people as its official.
He recalled that though the debate did not start today, as it could be traced to as far back as 1972 when the move first came up.
He noted that the vote cast in 2019 favored traditionalists who stood their ground that homosexuality does not conform to Christian teachings.
He explained, “If the plan succeeds conference, we will not be part of UMC that will change the language of the Book of Discipline to accommodate same-sex marriage.
“Our loyalty is with Jesus Christ”, the Bishop added.
He noted that the Nigerian members of the Methodist believed in the traditional mainstream Christianity and not the one they want to force on them, he added that the whole idea has gone against the African tradition as well.
