President Bola Tinubu attended the African Counter-Terrorism Summit in Abuja, a two day event scheduled for Monday to Tuesday, April 23, 2024, organized by Nigeria in partnership with the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) with the theme: ‘Strengthening Regional Cooperation and Institution Building to Address the Evolving Threat Terrorism.’ According to a statement issued on Sunday by Ajuri Ngelale,the Presidential Spokesperson, which stated that the summit will provide a platform to review the “nature and severity of the threat of terrorism on the continent.”
“The objective of the summit is to enhance multilateral counter-terrorism cooperation and reshape the international community’s collective response to terrorism in Africa while emphasizing the importance of African-led and African-owned solutions.”
Speaking during his opening remarks on Monday, President Tinubu stated that the fight against terrorism needs a collective approach, adding that the root causes of terrorism must be addressed.
In his remarks, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, said Nigeria would resume the prosecution of all Boko Haram detainees in Kainji, and he added that the Summit highlights Nigeria’s strategic commitment to the UN Counter-terrorism agreement.
The Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism, (UNOCT), Vladimir Voronkov stated that the success of UN depends on its partnership with African countries to provide African-based solutions.
Other top dignitaries in attendance for the summit include the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, the President of Togo, Faure Gnassingbe, amongst others.
