Nigerian Army Troops of Operation Lafiya Dole, positioned around Gamboru Ngala, Gamboru Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State, on Tuesday morning successfully averted a suicide attack attempted by three female suspected Boko Haram terrorists.
According to a statement by Deputy Director Public Relations, Operation Lafiya Dole, Theatre Command, Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu, the suspected insurgents clad with suicide vests approached troops even after they were ordered to unstrap their suicide vests.
“Two of the suicide bombers strapped with suicide vests had attempted infiltrating Gamboru town about 6.45 a.m. They were sighted by a joint patrol team of vigilant troops and Civilian JTF at Unguwar Yobe, who halted and ordered them to unstrap their suicide vests, to which they vehemently declined."
“All efforts to make the suicide bombers remove their IED vests failed which prompted the troops to neutralised them, while the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team (EOD) safely unstrapped and detonated the suicide vests,” the statement read in part.
The third female suicide bomber was also spotted and intercepted around the same area.
Nwachukwu said, subsequently, the suicide bomber confessed that herself and the other two terrorists were sent out on Tuesday about 3.30 a.m. to perpetrate havoc in Gamboru town.
The terrorist later revealed where she hid her suicide vest which was recovered. All three of the attackers have been taken into custody for further interrogation.
The army, therefore, reiterates the need for sustained vigilance and prompt reportage of suspicious activities by the public.
