The Nigerian Senate is set to interfere and scuttle ongoing recall of Sen. Dino Melaye, senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, by his constituents.This indication emerged, during Tuesday's Plenary, at the Senate chambers.
Sen. Dino Melaye cited Order 14 of the Senate Rule and drew the attention of the Senate to ongoing moves to recall him from the Red Chamber.
He accused the State Governor, Yahaya Bello of masterminding the plot and stressed that signatures collected and submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were forged. He appealed to the Senate to wade into the issue.
Reacting to the development, the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu stated that the "recall process was Dead on Arrival going by the constitution" stressing that 'it is a long process after verification of votes". He added that the Senate would verify the legitimacy of the votes before a conclusion is made.
Meanwhile, the statement credited to the Deputy Senate President has sparked massive outrage with commentators expressing suspicion that the Senate may attempt to scuttle or tamper with the process.
Some have called on the Senate to allow INEC carry out its constitutional responsibilities without undue interference.
