Following Wednesday's posthumous award of GCFR to the presumed winner of the June 12 presidential elections held in 1993, MKO Abiola by President Muhammdu Buhari and the declaration of June 12 as Nigeria's future democracy day celebration, the family of Abiola has taken a swipe at former President Olusegun Obasanjo for failing to recognize him, despite being a direct beneficiary of his struggle.
It is widely believed that after the annulment of the June 12 election and the subsequent conduct of general elections years after, Obasanjo was 'selected' to appease the South West after the debacle.
Despite intense pressure on Obasanjo to posthumously declare Abiola the winner of the annulled election, award him GCFR and declare June 12 as democracy day, he failed to so, to the consternation of his family and activists who were involved in the struggle.
Meanwhile, moments after the Buhari's declaration, Abiola's daughter, Risola Abiola took to Twitter to blast the former President over his decision to deny her father the honour. Reacting to a follower @emekajo1 who had cautioned them to be weary of Greek gifts coming from a bitter and tribalistic hearts, she replied by blasting Obasanjo. His tweet read "Yoruba's should be wary of Greeks bearing gift cos nothing good can come out of a bitter and tribalistic heart. #Trojanhorse"
Risola replied by tweeting
"Lol dude.... Obasanjo is a Yoruba man, also from Ogun state....what did he do to acknowledge it all despite being a direct beneficiary of that struggle. The fact that some people refuse to acknowledge the truth doesn’t mean others won’t do the right thing."
