The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami, has called for synergy among prosecuting agencies in the fight against human trafficking and forced labour. Malami made the call at the 2017 International Day against trafficking in persons organised by the Ministry of Justice and in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP in Abuja, Nigeria.
The seminar had as its theme: Elimination of Human Trafficking-Advocacy for Prosecuting Agencies and the Public. He noted that poverty and lack of employment opportunities are some of the factors that lure victims of trafficking to look to other countries for most of the privileges that they do not have in their home countries.
He added that trafficking and forced labour has become great concerns across the world because trafficked persons are deprived of their basic right to dignity and life.
According to him, “no society can effectively police itself without the involvement of the citizens”.
He added that efforts must be made to explore ways and means to bring all stakeholders in the fight against trafficking onboard in order to halt the menace.
