The President, Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday met behind closed doors with former President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. According to NAN, the former president arrived at the State House at about 2.00 p.m, and went straight to the president’s office where they held a closed session for about fifteen minutes. It was gathered that the former president was on a “thank you” visit to the president, who recently consoled him over an attack on his country home, Otuoke, Bayelsa, by unknown gunmen last December.
Buhari reassured Jonathan of his safety and security. The President had put a call through to his predecessor to sympathise with him over the attack. During the attack, three of the gunmen were killed, while a soldier also died.
The meeting took place shortly after the President held a crucial meeting with Security Chiefs at the Villa. It was gathered that all the security chiefs including the Inspector General of Police, the Director-General of DSS and that of the NIA were all in attendance.
The security meeting is believed to have been held following calls by the Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe for the resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari. Abaribe, while contributing to a debate on the deteriorating security situation in the country on the floor of the Senate yesterday, claimed that Buhari government had failed to proffer solutions to the high rate of insecurity across Nigeria.
The House of Representatives in a similar fashion has passed a resolution calling on the president to sack the service chiefs.
