The National Executive Committee of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will on Tuesday decide the fate of the National Chairman of the Party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun at a crucial meeting billed to take place in Abuja. The tenure of members of the National Working Committee (NWC) headed by Chief John Odigie- Oyegun as well as the State Working Committee which is expected to expire on June 30,
was last month extended by one year, with the party’s convention earlier scheduled to hold before June 30, now uncertain.
The elongation of the tenure of the executive of the party has further polarized the party with the camp of one of the National Leaders of the party and former Governor of Lagos state, Bola Tinubu kicking against the decision. Tinubu had in a statement issued by his media aide questioned the tenure elongation, explaining that the development was in breach of the party's constitution.
In a move to ventilate his grievances, Tinubu has reportedly abandoned the Presidential task of reconciling feuding members of the party across the country and was absent at the Caucus meeting held on Monday in Abuja.
Dailytrust had reported that the NEC meeting may propose the constitution of a Caretaker Committee to manage the affairs of the party ahead of the 2019 general elections. The move according to the report is targeted at pacifying Tinubu who has been in a running battle with the National Chairman. Recall that Tinubu has at different times wrote scathing letters against Oyegun, seeking his resignation. Just recently, he accused Oyegun of attempting to frustrate his Presidential mandate.
Sources with knowledge of what transpired at yesterday’s APC Caucus meeting, told Dailytrust that aggrieved members have made up their minds that the tenure elongation approved for Oyegun and others by the NEC of the party must be reversed for peace to reign.
The sources said ninety per cent of the problems bedeviling the party could be resolved by President Muhammadu Buhari.
“A decision must be taken between today (yesterday) and tomorrow (today). If those that matter insist that the NWC members must continue, the likes of Tinubu and many National Assembly members would have to decide on what to do to remain relevant politically,” one of the sources said.
