Youngest Nobel Prize laureate and Pakistani activist for girl child education, Malala Yousafzai has called on the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo to urgently declare state of emergency in the education sector to facilitate massive enrolment of children and reduce the number of school dropouts in the country.
Malala made the call yesterday during a closed door meeting with the Acting President.
Addressing State House Correspondents yesterday after the meeting, the activist said "the first issue I discussed with the Acting President was to ask the government to declare a state of emergency for education because the education of the Nigerian girls and boys is really important.”
She added that she had met the Chibok girls that were released recently and expressed satisfaction at their rehabilitation process. She also called on the government to intensify efforts toward ensuring the release of other girls still in Boko Haram captivity.
“In the morning, I met Chibok girls and I was very happy at what the minister is doing to support the Chibok girls. I’m really excited to see them going back to their homes and to their families and continuing their education. But I hope the other girls who are still under abduction of Boko Haram are released.”
Malala also urged the government to encourage the implementation of Child Rights Acts across all states of the federation.
