President Muhammadu Buhari has sworn in six newly appointed National Commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The six new INEC Commissioners are Mallam Mohammed Haruna (Niger State), Mrs. Mary Agbamuche-Mbu (Delta State), Ukaegbu Kenneth Nnamdi (Abia State), Maj. Gen. A. B Alkali (Rtd) (Adamawa State), Prof. Rhoda Gumus (Bayelsa State) and Mr. Sam Olemekun (Ondo State).
The brief ceremony took place on Wednesday before the weekly virtual Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in the Council Chambers, Presidential Villa, Abuja, and had in attendance the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo; the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan; and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.
Also present at the ceremony was the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha; INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu; the National Security Adviser (NSA), Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno (Rtd), and some Ministers scheduled to attend the FEC meeting.
The Head of Service, Folashade Yemi-Esan, and other Ministers were virtually attending the meeting from their respective offices in Abuja.
Speaking to State House Correspondents after the swearing-in ceremony, INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu said, “Well, it’s a good day for the Commission, with the swearing-in of the six National Commissioners, we have the full complements of twelve National Commissioners. It's coming three days to by-elections in four states of the Federation and as we plan for the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections.
“As we continue to prepare for the 2023 general elections, we’ll go on firing on all cylinders now that we have the full complement of commissioners and Nigerians should expect the best out of the Commission”.
Immediately after the swearing-in ceremony, President Buhari proceeded with the weekly virtual FEC meeting.
The Council will deliberate on memos presented by the various Ministers in attendance for approval.
