President Bola Tinubu has directed the National Economic Council to come up with inputs on palliatives and the minimum wage review as part of measures to cushion the effect of hardship experienced by Nigerians owing to subsidy removal. Speaking during a meeting with members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Tinubu directed NEC led by Vice President Kashim Shettima to mobilise various interventions to assist Nigerians. The President described the level of impoverishment in the country as “unacceptable,” urging state governors to collaborate with the Federal Government to tackle poverty nationwide. He encouraged political leaders to downplay their differences and jointly focus on alleviating the sufferings and pains of the people.
Meanwhile, major oil marketers yesterday donated 100 mass transit buses worth N10 billion to the federal government to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal. The marketers hoped that other well-meaning corporate bodies will emulate their gesture to Nigerians.
The news was shared by the Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, who spearheaded the representatives of some major oil marketers on a courtesy visit to President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday.
