The House of Representatives on Tuesday ordered commercial banks to immediately unfreeze all bank accounts belonging to the wife of the former president, Patience Jonathan.  The House Committee on Public Petition gave the order during a public hearing held in Abuja.

The Committee stated that the freezing was carried out in flagrant disregard to the law as no court order was obtained for the purpose.

Patience Jonathan's representative from Granville Abibo(SAN) and Co Law Firm had disclosed at the resumed hearing that the EFCC have continued to harass his client. He said based on mere letters from the EFCC, most of Patience Jonathan's accounts were frozen including her personal salary account. He listed the banks to include Union Bank, Ecobank, First Bank, Fidelity Bank and Diamond bank.

The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Uzoma Nkem-Abonta in his ruling said; “we are not siding anybody, but the committee hereby direct all the banks concerned to defreeze all the accounts that have no specific restraining order from any court, or the EFCC.”
