The Federal Executive Council has approved the sum of N20 billion for the rehabilitation of Ikorodu-Shagamu road in Lagos State South-West Nigeria. Information and Culture Minister, Lai Mohammed revealed this while briefing journalists at the end of Wednesday’s cabinet meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Bujhari.
He said the aim was to reduce road accidents and boost economic activities on that axis, as well as the transportation of agricultural products to the market.
Lai Mohammed, who spoke on behalf of the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, whose ministry got the approval, said: “The Council awarded a contract for the rehabilitation of the Ikorodu-Shagamu road in Lagos state for the sum of N20, 845, 336, 248.20 and the significance for the award of this contract is to reduce accidents and loss of lives and also reduce the travel time as wel as the operating cost for transporters and commuters and more importantly it will enhance the movement of petroleum and agricultural products and other commercial activities.”
Also speaking, the Minister of State, Aviation, Hadi Sirika announced that the Council also approved the sum of N4.2 billion for the purchase of fire fighting equipment at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology Zaria, Kaduna State.
“The Council approved the award of a contract for the design, manufacture and installation of fully automated fire and smoke aircraft training simulator in the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology Zaria. The total contract sum is N4, 233, 756, 047, 85 and the contract was awarded to a company in the United Kingdom,” he disclosed.
Sirika said the installation of the fire fighting equipment at the College of Aviation is extremely important and would also be utilized by the Federal Fire Service and even State governments.
He said: “Fire is a no go in aviation and we cannot afford to continue to send people outside this country to learn how to fight fire when we have all it takes. So we have conceptualized and developed the project and now it will be installed in Zaria that will enhance the capacity of the College and generate internal revenue and the Federal Fire Service, State governments and anybody that is into fire fighting can leverage on the equipment that we will bring because it is live fire that they will be trained how to fight it in Zaria.”
On his part, Education Minister, Mr Adamu Adamu told journalists that the Council approved the contract for the building of the Faculty of Law at the University of Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State, at the cost of N8.1 million.
Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung gave a scorecard of his Ministry, where he stated that the democratization of sports federations in the country has helped the country scoop more medals for Nigeria.
He added that a review of the country’s youth policy was reviewed, leading to the empowerment of 900 youths.
Similarly, the Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Professor Stephen Ocheni said over 15,000 would soon be employed under the youth employment scheme of government.
