The President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to exploit the Democracy Day Celebration to constitute the long awaited Minimum Wage Negotiation Committees. The NLC President made the call in a statement issued to journalists in Abuja on Sunday to mark the Democracy Day celebration.
According to him, since the minimum wage was increased to N18,000 six years ago, it will not be out of place for the Federal Government to commence processes toward reviewing the minimum wage, more so that economic recession is impacting negatively on Nigerian workers.
“We, therefore, urge the Federal Government to use the occasion of the Democracy Day to announce the composition of the tripartite negotiation committee as this is imperative for the government to review the National Minimum Wage.”
Ayuba Wabba further condemned the reported plot by some compromised military personnel to truncate democratic practice in the country, stressing that Labour Unions in the country would vehemently resist such move.
The statement reads "NLC wishes to state in the strongest possible tone that it is categorically opposed to any further military adventurism in the body politics of our nation. The damage military rule caused our nation is not only in the realm of our political culture, it deepened and virtually institutionalized corruption in all segments of our national life. We call on the Chief of Army Staff to go beyond just informing Nigerians and cautioning those trying to derail our democracy to desist from it.”
