Google launches new Titan security key with passkey support, allowing users to store up to 250 unique passkeys. This new key features a USB-C connection and NFC capability. It aims at providing enhanced security for online accounts. Priced at $35, this new offering is designed to work with newer computers equipped with USB-C port. It can also work well with most Android and iOS devices that support USB or NFC. The key can be used with passwordless technologies from Apple, Microsoft, Google and other brands. The Titan security key is a phishing-resistant two-factor authentication device that works with an increasing number of applications.
Google has now launched new USB-A and USB-C models that will both provide NFC capabilities. They will replace current models.
Google has been planning to replace passwords with passkeys, recently adding support to all Google accounts.
Passkeys leverage FIDO2 credentials and cryptography, enabling users to easily and securely log in to their accounts.
“We’re excited about the potential of passkeys, but know there’s no security silver bullet for everyone. Some people require a solution not dependent on smartphones or use devices that don’t support passkeys — everyone has different approaches to security, but we all share one goal: stop attacks. That’s why we intentionally designed the latest Titan Security Keys to encompass the secure cryptography of passkeys on a portable piece of hardware,” Google said.
Google has committed to giving out 100,000 security keys for free in 2024 to high-risk users around the world.
The Titan Security Key serves as an additional layer of security, acting as a second lock after the user’s password to prevent phishing and unauthorized access to online accounts, including Gmail. It is backed by special firmware engineered by Google to verify the key’s integrity and is built on FIDO open standards, making it compatible with various apps and services. Moreover, it is compatible with Google’s Advanced Protection Program, which is the company’s strongest security offering.
