eNaira Completes Over N100m Worth Of Transactions - CBN

The central bank digital currency, eNaira with over 500,000 consumer wallets, and over 80,000 merchant wallets with downloads occurring in over 160 countries, the currency recorded over N100 million worth of transactions. According to Ch’Edozie Okonjo, the central bank of Nigeria (CBN) Controller, Enugu branch, since the launch of the e-Naira, there had been a flood of interest and positive feedback from users within and outside the shores of Nigeria.

According to Ch’Dozie during the 2021 Annual Bankers Dinner and Lecture, organised by the Enugu State branch of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, the CBN has recorded over 34,000 transactions on the eNaira platform, amounting to over N188 million.

He added that the world had yet to revert to its previous regular system, he continued by stating that the COVID-19 pandemic, had accelerated the global shift to virtual events and a more digital environment, with the global payment system serving as a prime example.

The CBN Controller, Enugu branch explained that while cash usage was dropping, both locally and globally, digital payments were on the rise, necessitating the launch of the eNaira, the Nigerian central bank’s digital currency.
