A 16-year-old student in Somalia has rejected a request for him to become a deputy commissioner of the south-eastern state of Hirshabelle.

Feisal Abdullahi Omar was asked by the State's Minister for Internal Affairs Mohamed Ali Adle.

He said that the appointment came after people visited his father and asked them to propose a representative for a clan seminar.

Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza on Sunday set May 17 as the date for a referendum that could extend his rule for at least a decade.

The small Central Africa nation has been unstable since 2015, when Nkurunziza decided to seek a third term in office that his opponents said was unconstitutional. |

The referendum will decide whether to amend the constitution to extend presidential terms to seven years from five.

UK police are keeping "an open mind" about whether a fatal attack on an Egyptian student in Nottingham which sparked outrage in her home country was racially motivated.

Mariam Moustafa, 18, died on Wednesday after being attacked by a group in Nottingham on 20 February.

Nigeria has withdrawn the last batch of 108 Nigerian police officers from the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) after five years of service. UNMIL said the remaining 108 Nigerian FPU officers, the last UNMIL uniformed contingent remaining in Liberia, withdrew as part of the UN mission’s termination.

Former South African President Jacob Zuma will be prosecuted for corruption relating to a 30 billion rand ($2.5 billion) arms deal in the late 1990s, chief state prosecutor Shaun Abrahams said on Friday. “After consideration of the matter, I am of the view that there are reasonable prospects of successful prosecution of Mr Zuma on the charges listed in the indictment,” Abrahams said.

Liberia's Ministry of Health has revealed it is fighting to control an outbreak of Lassa fever which has killed two people since the beginning of March.

A spokesman told the BBC the two confirmed victims were a 57-year old woman and a 44-year-old man.

The two cases happend in the central city of Gbarnga and the capital Monrovia respectively, which are almost 200km (125 miles), apart.
