Sierra Leone’s elections body, the National Electoral Commission (NEC) on Sunday released 75% percent of the presidential poll result. The main opposition party, the Sierra Leone People’s party SLPP candidate Julius Maada is now ahead with a narrow lead over the candidate of the ruling party, All People’s Congress, Samura Wilson Kamara.

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta called opposition leader Raila Odinga “his brother” on Friday and promised “we will begin a process of bringing our people together” after last year’s contentious elections. Odinga told national television “it is time to resolve our differences,” as the two politicians made their first public appearance together since the Oct. 26 repeat presidential election last year.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Thursday congratulated Nigerian women for their achievements on the commemoration of this year’s International Women’s Day.

Mauritian President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, Africa’s only female head of state, is to resign over a financial row. She has been accused of using a bank card provided by a charity to make personal purchases worth tens of thousands of dollars. She is to step down after ceremonies to mark the 50th anniversary of the island’s independence next week.

The Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), in Nairobi how allowed the suspended four medical staff associated with last month's brain surgery mix up, to return to work.

The hospital suspended an anaesthetist, a trainee surgeon, and two nurses after they carried out brain surgery on the wrong patient on 19 February.

In a tiny village in Egypt’s southern province of Assiut, 16-year-old Amany Shamekh, who wants to be an artist one day, recalls how she was illegally circumcised with a razor blade.

“The midwife came to the house, my mother took off my underwear and the lady said ‘hang in there’,” said Shamekh who grew up in the village of Awlad Serag.

“I felt the razor-blade, and when I saw the blood on the midwife’s hands I was going to die. I spent around a month unable to go to the bathroom because the wound hurt very much if it came in contact with water.”
