President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday met with the governors of states sharing border with Niger Republic, as part of consultations by President Tinubu regarding the coup situation in the West African nation, which resulted in the removal of the Nigerien President, Mohamed Bazoum by the military junta. In attendance for the meeting held at the State House, Abuja were Governors Umar Namadi (Jigawa State), Dikko Radda (Katsina State), Idris Nasir (Kebbi State), Ahmed Aliyu (Sokoto State) and Mai Malam Buni (Yobe State).
Although the details of the meeting are yet to be made public, the meeting is however coming as some members of Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS) imposed a border ban on Niger Republic.
President Tinubu who doubles as ECOWAS Chairman has also cut off Nigeria’s supply of electricity to the country while also proposing military action against Niger Republic, if diplomatic means fails to resolve the coup situation in the country.
In reaction, Niger’s military junta has recalled its ambassadors in Nigeria, France, Togo and others while also reopening its land borders and air space to neighboring nations not against the coup such as Algeria, Burkina Faso, Chad, Libya and Mali, excluding other ECOWAS member states.
