Namibia's President Hage Geingob has died at the age of 82 while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in the capital, Windhoek. According to his office, the country's independence struggle veteran died on Sunday at Lady Pohamba Hospital after a prolonged fight with cancer. While receiving the shocking news, world leaders including Nigeria’s President have extended their condolences. Vice-President Nangolo Mbumba who is now in acting capacity according to the country's constitution disclosed in a statement that "The Namibian nation has lost a distinguished servant of the people, a liberation struggle icon, the chief architect of our constitution and the pillar of the Namibian house.
“At this moment of deepest sorrow, I appeal to the nation to remain calm and collected while the Government attends to all necessary state arrangements, preparations, and other protocols. Further announcements in this regard will be made.”
Hage Geingob lived in exile for 27 years, spending time in Botswana, the US, and the UK, where he studied for a PhD in politics before returning to the country in 1989 shortly before independence and was first sworn in as president in 2015, but had however served in top political positions since independence.
Leaders from around the world have been sending condolence messages, among them is Bola Tinubu, Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and president of Nigeria, who described him as "a proponent of good governance, and an advocate of economic, social, and political solidarity among African peoples,”
