The US envoy at the United Nations, Jonathan Cohen, said the latest sanctions against Iran is to discourage Tehran from developing nuclear weapons and supporting militant groups as well as to get the country back to negotiations.
President Donald Trump enacted the new sanctions yesterday against Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his associates by denying them access to financial resources and to also block their access to any financial assets they have under US jurisdiction.
However, Iran criticized the Trump administration over the new US sanctions with the Foreign Ministry saying the measures imply “permanent closure” of diplomacy between Tehran and Washington.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said that Trump’s move means the end of diplomacy between the two countries.
“The fruitless sanctions on Iran’s leadership and the chief of Iranian diplomacy mean the permanent closure of the road of diplomacy with the frustrated US administration,” Mousavi said.
Meanwhile, Washington maintained that the measures were taken to get Tehran back to negotiations.
