The US States Department on Thursday accused the Syrian Government of using chemical weapon against its people in Eastern Ghouta. The Spokesman of the US states Department, Heather Nauert stated this in a tweet posted yesterday. He disclosed that credible reports obtained from the field indicated that Chlorine gas was used against civilians in the area, stressing that the development was worrisome.

The tweet also criticized Russia, Syria's closest ally of doing nothing to prevent the attack and frustrating efforts to investigate previous incidents involving the use of Chlorine gas on innocent civilian by the Syrian Government.

The tweet reads;

"Russia is making the wrong choice by not exercising its unique influence. To allow [the] Syria regime to use chemical weapons against its own people is unconscionable. We will pursue accountability"

Al Jazeera reports that the Nauert's comments followed a suspected chlorine gas attack in the rebel-held territory of Eastern Ghouta, on the outskirts of Damascus, on Thursday. The White Helmets volunteer rescue group posted photos of the suspected attack on Twitter, under the hashtag "Douma Suffocating". The tweet reads

"3 civilians killed and many injured, including suffocation cases among children, women and #CivilDefense volunteers! 28 air raids, 70 surface-to-surface missiles, some loaded w/chlorine gas and 200+ artillery shells targeted cities in #Eastern_Ghouta today! #Doumasuffocating"
