COVID-19: 26 Officers Of The Nigerian Army Test Positive

At least 26 officers of the Nigerian Army have tested positive for COVID-19 following the death of Major-General Olu Irefin last week, Sagir Musa, Army spokesperson said. The spokesperson made this assertion in a statement on Sunday, saying the army authorities directed all who attended the 2020 Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference to be tested after Irefin fell sick.

Nigeria has on Friday recorded 223 confirmed new cases of the novel coronavirus, indicating an increase in cases totalling the country's cases to 63,731, while one person died, bringing the death total to 1,154, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). The 223 cases recorded were from 17 states including Lagos (85), FCT (35), Akwa Ibom (24), Enugu (18), Plateau (13), Rivers (10), Abia (7), Ebonyi (6), Anambra (5), Adamawa (4), Bauchi (3), Imo (3), Ogun (3), Oyo (3), Kwara (2), Osun (1), Taraba (1).

The federal government has asked COVID-19 treatment centres across the country to prepare for reopening. some of the centres were shut after the country recorded a decline in cases. However, there has been a surge in COVID-19 cases, with a warning that there might be a second wave of the pandemic in the country. Speaking at the briefing of the presidential task force on COVID-19 on Thursday, the honourable Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire informed that he had directed health workers to be on red alert.

Long Acting Injection Prevents Women From HIV Infection

Researchers have discovered that injection of a long-lasting injection called cabotegravir, every 2 months is 89% more effective than Truvada pills in reducing the risk of HIV infection in women. Cabotegravir is being researched and developed by ViiV Healthcare, mostly owned by GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer Inc and Shionogi Limited. The study was also sponsored by the United States National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and ViiV. The study involved about 3200 women between 18 and 45 years across 7 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa which are Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Eswatini, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has ensured countries that the organisation will make COVID-19 vaccine accessible once a proven vaccine is developed and available. The Director-General, WHO, Tedros Ghebreyesus made this assertion while addressing the committee during a virtual session of the 70th WHO Regional Committee for Africa. "Our continent is facing a health crisis unlike any we have faced before. Yesterday, we crossed 1 million reported cases in the region, with more than 20,000 deaths.
