The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that female suicide bombers detonated explosives at the Muna area of Maiduguri, on Friday, in an attempt to infiltrate the town.
According to reports, four heavy explosions occurred between 9: 00 and 9: 30 pm, sending terrifying echoes to many parts of the town.
NEMA’s Northeast Zonal Coordinator, Mr Bashir Garga, disclosed that the suicide bombers detonated Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) strapped to their bodies behind the security trench at Muna Garage area, in the outskirts of Maiduguri Metropolitan Council.
Garba added that terrifying echoes by the explosions caused massive panic amongst residents of the area, who while fleeing for their lives sustained several injuries.
He added that the injured were referred to hospital for treatment in Maiduguri.
According to the Borno State Police Command, four female suicide bombers were involved in the attack which occurred around 9:49 pm.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Edet Okon, said in a statement that all four attackers infiltrated Muna Zawiya village in Mafa Local Government Area, before detonating their explosives, killing themselves and a female.
The explosions left several others injured.
Following the attack, policemen including members of Counter Terrorism Unit, Special Anti-Robbery Squad, and Explosives Ordinances Disposal specialists were dispatched to the area to bring the situation under control.
Muna Garage have continued to be a target for frequent attacks by suicide bombers, which is home to many people displaced by Boko Haram violence.
While normalcy has been restored to the area, the military has imposed a dusk to dawn curfew towards ensuring a hitch-free Easter celebration.
