Following the clash of police versus Shiite group yesterday in Abuja that consumed the Deputy Commissioner of police Musa Belel, President Buhari is considering the proscription of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN).
According to the source, the proscription is likely to come in the form of an executive order and is likely to come up today.
A security emergency meeting of security chiefs was summoned by Mr., President in an effort to proffer immediate and lasting solution to the threat of the IMN group that is now staring the national security in the eye, subsequently, and their resolution was that the group should be proscribed in Nigeria.
The resolution was a direct response to the protests that turned violent Monday when members of Shiite IMN took to the streets of Central Area in Abuja, the Nigerian capital.
The demonstration was slated in continuation of the group agitation demanding the release of their leader, Ibrahim El-zakzaky who has been in custody in the last four years.
Consequently, the protest turned violent as casualties were recorded at the end which includes the death of a Deputy Commissioner of police and some IMN members.
When Presidential spokespersons, Femi Adesina, and Garba Shehu, were contacted, they did not immediately return requests for comments about the president’s consideration for the proscription of the group on Monday night.
Some few days ago on July 10, federal lawmakers resolved that President Buhari administration should honour court orders and release the cleric. They expressed fears that Nigeria’s security crisis could get aggravated if IMN members become radicalized over the continued incarceration of their leader and unabated confrontations with security forces.
The proscription is believed to put an end to the madness of Shiites in Nigeria,” one of the official sources who confirmed the discussion on the executive order for proscription said.
