Gunmen have murdered retired Inspector General of Police Christopher Dega, Senior Special Assistant on Security to Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom. The incident occurred on Monday night in the Bukuru area in Jos South LGA, of Plateau State, where the victim was shot dead by the assailants. The Plateau state Police commissioner Edward Ebuka, told Channels Television that preliminary investigation revealed that the retired Assistant Inspector General who left Makurdi was trailed to Jos where he was shot dead. According to the police boss, some suspects have been arrested in connection to the crime and investigations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, Governor Ortom has again President Muhammadu Buhari to convene a national security dialogue over the escalating insecurity in the country.
“Government have failed completely. it is unfortunate these killings are unwarranted, if only government were ready to listen to superior ideas and advice and were proactive. It is unfortunate, I am part of the government, I can’t run away from it, so I can equally say that we have failed as a government because the primary responsibility of any responsible government is to provide security for lives and properties, if there is no security, nothing meaningful can thrive, there can be no development.
“Nobody will create industries or investments to put in Nigeria where people will be gainfully employed, no economic activities can go on, everybody will be afraid, and that is what is happening.
“My Senior Special Assistant on security retired AIG Dega served with me here, this is someone who has retired but is not tired and was still active, and so for him to have been murdered in the manner that we did, a retired AIG gone, then Professor Obiora can you imagine a whole professor just killed in that manner and look at what is happening Northeast Northwest, Northcentral Southsouth, Southeast Southwest so where is Nigeria again,” Ortom said.
Before his retirement from the police, Dega had served as commissioner of police in Borno and Edo states.
Dega’s killing occurred few days after the murder of a former political adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, Ahmed Gulak.
