The Kogi State High Court in Lokoja has ordered the arrest and remand of the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) Abdulrasheed Bawa, for disobedient to a court order, this judgment was delivered on 6th February, directing the Inspector-General of police to effect Bawa's arrest and remand in the Kuje correctional prison for the next 14 days until he purges himself of contempt. Justice R.O. Ayoola of the Kogi state high court granted the application for committal to prison of the anti-graft agency over disobedience to a court order.
Ali Bello was said to have filed a suit against the EFCC boss before the court over his illegal arrest and detainment and the court ruled in his favor. However, it was reported that the anti-graft commission will arraign Bello for money laundering in 3 days time after the judgment.
The EFCC's applications for setting aside and stay of execution of the ruling were refused for want of merit.
The court had, in Form 49, Order IX, Rule 13, marked: “HCL/697M/2022” and titled: “Notice to show cause why an order of committal should not be made,” asked the EFCC chairman to appear before it on January 18, 2022, to explain why he should not be jailed for flouting the order given on December 12, 2022, in a case filed by Ali Bello against EFCC and Bawa, as the first and second respondents, respectively.
