A missing Zamfara journalist, Hamisu Danjibga, has been found dead, according to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ). Confirming the death, VON in a statement on Thursday signed by its Director General, Osita Okechukwu, said “It is with a heavy heart that the staff and management of Voice of Nigeria (VON) announce the murder of Hamisu Danjibga, our correspondent who was kidnapped in the early hours of Monday, 18th September 2023, by terrorists at Zamfara State.
“Late Hamisu Danjibga was one of VON’s longest-serving Hausa service correspondents. He was a dedicated and diligent reporter and served in different capacities in his long career.”
The statement also commiserated with the bereaved family and encouraged security operatives to fish out those who committed the act.
Danjibga was declared missing earlier in the week but later found dead, the NUJ union’s secretary, Ibrahim Gada, said in a statement.
Similarly, the International Press Centre’s (IPC) Centre for Safety and Protection of Journalists, while reacting to the death of the journalists condemned the same in the strongest terms.
The Executive Director of IPC, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, described the circumstances surrounding Danjibga’s death as bizarre, considering that the family had raised an alarm that he was missing three days before his corpse was eventually found in a soak-away pit in his house.
