The United States has congratulated President Buhari on his re-election, urging Nigerians to eschew violence in the upcoming state elections next week. President Muhammadu Buhari, the Incumbent of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has defeated Atiku Abubakar the former vice president of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 23rd presidential election.

Though Atiku has rejected the result of the election and threatened to challenge it at the election Tribunal court.

In a statement by US Secretary of State, Michael R. Pompeo, the United States congratulated the people of Nigeria for the successful conduct of its Presidential and National Assembly elections, commending those who actively participated in the process.

Pompeo however, condemned those whose actions were detrimental and harmed Nigerians and the electoral process.

In his words, “We note the assessments of international and domestic observer missions affirming the overall credibility of the election, despite localized violence and irregularities in few places. We equally congratulate all other candidates for their peaceful involvement in the electoral process,”
