President Buhari Cancels Trip To Rwanda

President Muhamadu Buhari has cancelled his trip to Kigali, Rwanda, where he was expected to attend the Extraordinary Summit of the African Union scheduled for March 21, 2018.

The Federal Executive Council had on Wednesday, approved for the President to sign the framework agreement for establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area.

But a statement signed on Sunday by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tope Adeleye, noted that certain key stakeholders in Nigeria indicated that they had not been consulted, and therefore had some concerns on the provisions of the treaty.

UN Deputy Sec-Gen, Amina Mohammed

UN Deputy Secretary-General, Ms Amina Mohammed, would next week travel to Nigeria where she is expected to hold talks with President Muhammadu Buhari and other top government functionaries.

The UN said: “On 23 March, she will travel to Nigeria for consultations with senior Government officials and other stakeholders in Lagos and Abuja.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has spoken on President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to withhold assent to the Electoral Act Amendment bill.

INEC said the electoral body would not discuss the implications of the president’s action since the process had not been concluded.

INEC’s Chief Press Secretary, CPS, Rotimi Oyekanmi, said that the current dates for the 2019 general elections were fixed in line with provisions of the existing law.

On the implications of the president’s decision, Oyekanmi said, “It is within the powers of the National Assembly to make laws.

President Buhari Orders Deployment Of NSCDC Personnel To Northeast

President Muhammadu Buhari has instructed that officials of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) be deployed to the northeast to secure secondary schools.

This is part of frantic efforts towards providing more security for students and the community in the northeast at large, following the abduction of over 100 girls from the Government Girls Science Technical College (GGSTC) in Dapchi, Yobe state, about a month ago.

Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano has been sworn in for a second term in office.

Obiano was sworn in by the Chief Judge of the state, Hon Justice Peter Umeadi at exactly 1pm amidst jubilation by citizens of the state who thronged the Alex Ekwueme square venue of the inauguration in their numbers.

The Nigerian senator representing Bauchi South at the Senate, Mallam Ali Wakil, has passed away, at age 58.

According to report Wakili, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Poverty Alleviation, died following a brief illness on Saturday.
