The Supreme Court on Sunday fixed October 30, 2019, for the commencement of the hearing of appeal suit filed by the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 general elections, Atiku Abubakar, challenging the judgment of the presidential election petition tribunal, which validated the election of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The decision of the apex court was made known on PDP’s Official Twitter page of Sunday.
The tweet reads
“Breaking News! The Supreme Court of Nigeria has scheduled to hear the Appeal of the @OfficialPDPNig and @atiku / @PeterObi, arising from the judgment of the Appeal Court, on Wednesday, October 30, 2019. It’s time to #RescueNigeria.”
The decision is coming after the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) lamented the delay in the constitution of panel by the Chief Justice of Nigeria to hear the appeal filed by Atiku and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The Spokesman of CUPP, Ikenga Ugochinyere had also accused the CJN of plotting to jettison an age-long tradition of the Supreme Court by randomly appointing Justices to the panel. He held that the tradition was that seven most senior Justices of the apex court were appointed to the panel. He further alleged that the plot to handpick justices was aimed at influencing the decision of the panel.
Meanwhile, the apex court is yet to make public the names of justices that will serve in the panel.
