The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) has threatened to embark on strike if the Federal Government failed to implement an existing agreement with the Union. The Union which made the position known in a statement signed by the Secretary General of ASUP, Anderson Ezeibe, threw its weight behind the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) stressing that the move was aimed at restoring sanity to the Nigerian Universities.
The statement reads
“ASUP notes the renewal of hostilities on the country’s university campuses between ASUU and government of Nigeria. While we are in unconditional solidarity with ASUU in this struggle to restore sanity to Nigerian universities, we are calling on the government to commence without further delay the implementation of agreements entered into with ASUP to forestall an impending crisis in the Polytechnic sub-sector.”
ASUP had severally embarked on warning and indefinite strikes in the past to protest against decay in infrastructures, dichotomy between Bachelor's degree and the Higher National Diploma (HND) as well as poor funding among others.
