The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris has succumbed to the pressure and warning issued by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and is set to appear before the Senate Panel investigating allegations levelled against him by Sen. Isa Misau, the Senator representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District.
Idris had refused to appear before the panel on Wednesday after an invitation had earlier been extended to him. The development irked the members of the panel who promptly reported the matter to the Senate. Reacting, the Senate President was said to have asked the IGP to "respect himself and appear before the panel". The Senate also threatened to arrest him if he fails to honour the invitation.
Sen. Misau had accused the IGP of corruption, abuse of office and sexual affairs with female police officers. He also claimed that the Police Chief recently awarded special promotion to female offices and his cronies in disregard to police rules. Most recently, the Senator accused the IGP of supplying the Wife of the President two Prado jeeps and collecting billions of Naira from private individuals and organizations enjoying police protection even when the Force is not a revenue generating agency.
Meanwhile, on Friday, the IGP told State House Correspondents after a brief meeting with the President that he was ready to appear before the Senate. He attributed the delay in appearance to ongoing efforts to assemble his legal team.
According to him “These are legal issues. We are discussing with our legal team. Obviously, if there is need, we are going to appear for the sake of having respect for the Senate. I will appear before them”
The IGP however failed to state the date he is billed to appear before the panel.
