The war of words between the Presidency and the Judiciary over ongoing campaign against corruption is yet to abate, with both sides throwing jibes at each other. On Sunday, the Special Adviser to the President on Prosecution, Okoi Obono-Obla accused one of the judges recently recalled by the National Judicial Council (NJC) of collecting over N90m gratification from 100 lawyers.
Obono-Obla who made the disclosure in a telephone interview with Punch Correspondent hinted that the Economic and Financial Crime Commission would file charges against the judge on Tuesday.
He accused the NJC of attempting to weaken the anti-corruption war by recalling judges who had pending corruption cases in court. According to him “the judge will be charged. He was deliberately cleared by the NJC. But now, we have established a case of receiving gratification from 100 lawyers against him. The EFCC will file the charges against the judge and the lawyers by Monday or Tuesday.”
He added that "apart from charging the lawyers alongside the judge, we are also going to bring disciplinary proceedings against those lawyers.”
On June 1, Vigil360 had reported the recall of suspended judges by the NJC. The NJC claimed that its action was based on the discharge and acquittal of some of the accused judges as well perceived refusal by the Federal Government to press charges against some of the judges.
