The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to recover funds meant for internally displaced persons (IDPs) which were allegedly stolen by the “presidency cabal”.

In a statement released on Sunday, Kola Ologbondiyan, spokesman of the party, said the government is not sincere with the rehabilitation of IDPs.

Ologbondiyan accused the government of providing cover for those “frittering away billions of naira donated for the well-being of victims of insurgency”.

President Muhammadu Buhari has threatened to sack over 45 chief executives of federal parastatals and agencies that refuse to appear before the National Assembly to defend their budgets.

This follows the outcome of the President’s meeting with the leadership of the National Assembly on Thursday, at the Presidential Villa, during which the lawmakers had complained to President Buhari that the chief executives were refusing to appear before it for their budget defence.

Organisers of the annual National Political Summit say that preparations have been concluded for a hitch-free third edition of the programme designed to engage stakeholders on ways to address political challenges confronting the country.

Chairman of the Board, Save Nigeria Group, Dr Gregory Ibe, told newsmen in Abuja that the three-day event would provide a platform where various agitations in the country would be discussed.

The event scheduled to take place from March 19 to March 21 in Abuja has the theme “Reforming the Nigerian Federation: Which way forward’’.

Former governor of Adamawa state and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Murtala Nyako, says the crisis in the ruling party might affect it in 2019.

He said the extension of tenure of the party’s national working committee (NWC) may lead to its downfall.

The party extended the tenure of the NWC led by John Oyegun by 12 months.

Yahaya Bello, governor of Kogi state, had said the extension would take effect from June 30 and was necessary considering the time left for the party to conduct its congresses and conventions.

The political atmosphere is charged in Kwara State as no fewer than 800 members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have defected to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Mr Iyiola Oyedepo, the Chairman of the PDP in the state, received the defectors in Ilorin on Friday during the visit of executive members of the party in the North Central Zone.

Dr Hanafi Alabere, who led the defectors from Alanamu Ward in Ilorin West Local Government Area, said they were fed up with the APC.

Rights group, Amnesty International, has faulted reports of oil spills in the Niger Delta by Shell and Eni, and is asking the Federal Government re-open investigations into 89 oil spills in the region.

According to the group, the oil giants under-reported the number of spills in the last seven years and also attributed the causes to activities of militants and oil thieves.

But findings by pipeline experts, accufacts, which carried out the investigation on behalf of Amnesty International, also blamed the spills on pipeline corrosion.

Part of the report also accuses the companies of responding late to reports of oil spills.
