The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), a socio-cultural group of Northern Nigeria has buy the idea thrown up by some group of House of Representatives members pushing for a return to the parliamentary system of government in country. The 60 federal lawmakers, championed by Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, had approached the ACF on Thursday soliciting for support for their proposed legislation transitioning from the current presidential system that seem too expensive for a third world country like Nigeria to fund.
Chinda highlighted the need for all concern citizens who need actual development to support this course from regional level until it gets the desired number of support from other important stakeholders in the country for the smooth passage of the bill, emphasizing that the parliamentary system would enhance better accountability among officeholders.
Reacting to the call, ACF Board of Trustees Chairman, Bashir Dalhatu, expressed satisfaction with most of the points highlighted by the reps members and has pledged the ACF’s readiness to provide necessary support to push for it till the very end.
Dalhatu said “We have agreed to constitute a committee that will work with the lawmakers to review the draft bill they have prepared and provide suggestions and input. We believe this change will be in the best interest of all Nigerians”.
He noted that the current presidential system is costly and ineffective in managing a country of over two hundred million persons, especially interns of accountability, emphasizing the need for a change in governance style for the benefit of all Nigerians.
