Russian humanoid robot FEDOR has been taught to dual-wield pistols. How the original Terminators were built is unknown, at least in one timeline, “Cyberdyne Systems” was able to use reverse-engineering and develop robots from the scavenged hand and CPU’s.
According to the Terminator film series, a terminator is an autonomous robot, typically humanoid i.e. a robot with its body shape built to resemble the human body, originally conceived as a virtually indestructible soldier, infiltrator and assassin. There has always been thought and fear of robots taking over the world, mental images inspired by the Terminator movie immediately spring to mind. But if this is to happen, they wouldn’t be walking around with guns.
Russian humanoid robot FEDOR has been taught to dual-wield pistols. FEDOR (Final Experimental Demonstration Object Research), referred to the AR-700 series (for work in extreme conditions). The enterprise also produces AR-600 household robots. FEDOR stands six foot tall, weighs between 106-160 kg depending on extra equipment, two arms, two legs, a head and a torso and can lift up to 20 kg of cargo. It’s basically the dark grey humanoid bot that haunts your dreams when you fall asleep watching some futuristic dystopian horror flick, and the Russian military is pretty proud of that.
Its creators claim that teaching them to shoot will help improve their motor skills and decision-making abilities. Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Dmitry Rogozin, took to twitter to show off how the bot is progressing, including its newly acquired ability to hold and fire two pistols at the same time, like some kind of mechanical action movie hero. A key task for FEDOR will be to "assist in construction and use of bases" on the moon and potentially other planets, said its Russian designers FPI. The robot can "crawl, stand up after falling down, take and leave driver's seat in a car, use tools and operate in a regular building".
Final Experimental Demonstration Object Research
FEDOR is targeted to be the sole passenger of Russia’s new spacecraft, Federatsiya (even the spacecraft got a Fedor-esque name), in 2021 for the shuttle’s inaugural flight. It also will serve as a rescue unit for the Emergencies Ministry. The robot was originally created for rescue work, but military uses have also been suggested by engineers. Numerous experts have issued warnings over where the development of robots with artificial intelligence is leading us.
University of Cambridge Astronomer Royal and Emeritus Professor of Cosmology and Astrophysics, Lord Martin Rees, warned just this month that machines could soon take over from humans. FEDOR is the prototype of a new artificial intelligence the Russian leader wants to send to the International Space Station. It can work in the extreme temperatures on the moon without the need for a space suit - and can even 'live' outside in the open. This comes as Russia revealed plans to send humans to the Moon by 2031.
