Doyin Okupe, former Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan, was on Wednesday released by officials of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The former presidential aide was arrested on Monday by the EFCC over allegations of hate speech and cyber stalking.
He made his release known on his verified Twitter handle, stressing that he was treated with utmost courtesy while in EFCC custody. He commended the Commission for not keeping him beyond the prescribed 48 hours.
His tweets read
”The Efcc released me on bail tonight within 48hrs as stipulated by law. I was treated with utmost courtesy. I feel proud & grateful.”
The Peoples Democratic Party had described his arrest as an assault and intimidation of its members by the EFCC, claiming that the move was politically driven. The party's National Publicity Seceatry, Kola Ologbondiyan had said
“Media Adviser to the Director General of PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, @doyinokupe detained by the EFCC. It is a season of assault, harassment and intimidation for the members of PDP. Details shortly.”
