The Federal Government (FG) is set to inaugurate a committee on national minimum wage, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval. This was disclosed in a letter by George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) titled, ‘Inauguration of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage’ and addressed to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) which stated that inauguration ceremony would take place on Tuesday, 30 January, 2024.
The letter reads, “I write to inform you that Mr. President has approved the inauguration of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage.
“The inauguration will take place on Tuesday, 30th January 2024 at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, State House, Abuja at 12:00 noon prompt.
“Members are to be seated by 11:30 am. Kindly note that a shuttle bus will be available at the pilot gate convey members to the venue from 10:00 am.”
The minimum wage was last revised in 2019 from N18,000 to N30,000 during the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari and reports suggest the current N30,000 minimum wage would expire by the end of March 2024.
However, labour unions in the country have been protesting for another review of the minimum wage as a result of President Tinubu’s inauguration speech on May 19, 2023 where he announced the removal of fuel subsidy, resulting in an increase of the cost of living.
