Senators have described as unrealistic some fiscal projections of the 2018 national budget and want federal agencies to be reduced as public finances spent on them remains unjustified.

They made these arguments during debate on the general principles of the document, TVC News reports.

Senators at the commencement of debate on the general principles of the eight point six trillion naira budget said the government runs the risk of not meeting the expectations of Nigerians in 2018.

The federal lawmakers kicked against key assumptions of the budget in areas like exchange rate, deficit, oil benchmark price and further argued that the government can do away with fifty percent of the non-debt current expenditure.

Senators also want a reduction in government departments especially those that are no longer productive. They resolved that agencies which are commercial in nature should no more be funded by the public treasury.
