The official death toll from Cyclone Idai, which tore through southern Africa more than a week ago, has risen to an unprecedented figure. The number of people declared dead in Mozambique rose from 242 to 417, Land and Environment Minister Celso Correia said.
Algerian President Resigns
President Abdelaziz Bouteflika of Algeria has on Tuesday resigned from office. The ailing President submitted his resignation with immediate effect, relinquishing power in the face of prolong massive street protests. The sudden resignation came in the wake of the demand by the country’s powerful army chief of staff that Bouteflika is declared sick and leaves office immediately.
Bouteflika May Resign Soonest
According to media sources in Algeria, President Abdelaziz Bouteflika is preparing to announce his resignation in accordance with article 102 of the constitution. Under the article, a constitutional council can declare Bouteflika unfit for office or he can resign himself.
